"Grow chair" – Innovative Medical and Therapeutic Equipment Manufacturing Using 3D Printing (SLS)

  • Field: Medical technology, health and therapy equipment

  • Technologies used: Selective Laser Sintering (SLS / 3D Printing)

About the Project

Back pain and spinal problems are among the most common causes of disability worldwide. To address this issue, EEM AG developed and patented the distinctive "grow chair" chairs designed for extension therapy – spinal relaxation and wellness. During therapy (over 10–20 minutes), spinal discs refill with fluid, muscle tension is reduced, the nervous system is calmed, and body regeneration is promoted.

The chairs are manufactured in three configurations:

  • grow private – designed for home use (e.g., with elegant walnut finish).

  • grow medical – with easy-to-clean, medically certified surfaces.

  • grow office – adapted for office use.

Engineering and Manufacturing Solutions

In manufacturing these chairs, conventional 3D printing technologies (FFF and SLA) were abandoned, as their products did not meet mechanical strength requirements and required excessive post-processing. Advanced SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) technology was selected for production.

  • Functional parts: More than 20 functional components are manufactured via SLS for each chair, exhibiting the same mechanical and aesthetic properties as injection-molded parts.

  • 3D printed components: The chairs feature 16 protective covers, an electronics protective housing, a remote control holder, and a unique quick-release headrest locking system, all manufactured via 3D printing.

  • Complex design: A sophisticated headrest locking mechanism with embedded moving parts and integrated spring function was implemented, which cannot be manufactured using traditional production methods.

Results Achieved

  • Accelerated development process: SLS technology enabled rapid testing and delivery of ready-to-use components to market.

  • Manufacturing flexibility: An excellent balance was achieved between prototype development and low-volume end-product manufacturing.

  • Market-proven product: Hundreds of "grow chair" chairs have been manufactured and are successfully used in homes, offices, and medical facilities.

Result

SLS technology enabled rapid testing and delivery of ready-to-use final components to market. A smooth balance was achieved between prototype development and low-volume end-product manufacturing. Hundreds of therapeutic chair units have been manufactured and successfully deployed in the market (in homes, offices, and medical facilities).
